"Way back when," says Brad Binkowski, the corner
of State and Gorham Streets in Madison was occupied by a brewery.
More recently it was the home of a service station. Now it is on its
way to becoming a $1.5 million, two-story building for retail stores and
offices. Binkowski, a partner in McCaughey Development Associates,
the project's developer, says excavation at the site uncovered part of the
brewery's cellar, the dark semi-circle indicated by the arrow. From
1864 to 1919, the Hausmann Brewery operated at the spot. State Street
is in the foreground. Binkowski's lament: No brew remains,
"just lots of brick." |
